WM Series Header

Please note R3 cancelled due to water logged arena and car park – Re scheduled date coming soon

Run & Ride are please to be involved in a new 4 event Mountain Bike XC series with all the races being held in the West Midlands region. Targeted at “grass routes” level each event is being held a renowned venues promising old school MTB course, social relaxed atmosphere and close exciting racing.

The series starts on February 28th with the Cannock Chase Winter Classic. A single event that's been held for the past 3 years it’s often been the first main race of the year for many and always attracts a massive field. Many of the races will be sold out way before the event, such is it’s popularity! From there the series moves south and joins with co promoters “Malvern Cycle Sport” for round 2 and 3 of the series. Round 2 is being held at another classic venue, Eastnor Dear Park near the Malvern's. This venue offers a different kind of course to Cannock but still very much a true MTB course. Then we move over to Birchwood for round 3. The guys at Malvern Cycle Sport promise a real fun tight twisty course that will test all skills levels. For the final round we return back to Cannock for the Summer Classic to finish the whole series of in true style.

Event Details

As we’ve mentioned already the events are aimed at “grass routes” therefore the courses are designed so they can be completed safely by all abilities. There are technical sections but each will have “easy” lines so those with lower skill levels won’t have to worry. Another aspect that makes these events so much fun is there chilled out, social atmosphere. With races for age of 3yrs to 80yrs we hope to see the whole family coming along and having a go. We also work hard to make the events spectator friendly. From quality food outlets to trade stands to good viewing points we think it’s as important to keep those that come along to watch happy as it is the riders.

We’ve been in Mountain Bike racing for a while and we’ve developed a different category system that we believe promotes fairer, close, more competitive racing. We do away with the age category system (apart from for children) and instead focus on ability. The breakdown for these are below

Beginners - Please before you enter this category ask yourself is this the right race for you. If you are fit and like and have any inclination to chase Strava times then this is not the right category for you. As the name suggests this is for beginners, new riders or those that just know they aren’t super fit but like to have a go

Fun - Next category up from beginners. This is the most popular category. It’s for those who may of raced before but want to just enjoy it and not really worry about how quick they are. You like to go fast but you don’t spend hours a week on the bike and don’t class yourself as “quick”

Enthusiast - For the guys who race a fair bit, spend al lot of time training and generally rip round. Ideal for any Vets, Sport and quick Junior riders Not a category for Elite or Expert riders. British Cycling points will be issued for Vets, Junior, Sport, Grand Vets based on your overall finishing position

Pro / Expert – Top level racing for the quickest guys around. British cycling points will be issued for Elite and Expert riders based on your overall position

Singlespeed / Fat Bike – once again we’re offering up a category for each

Worth a mention is U8's, U10's and U13's races. The kids races have proved to be a massive success at every race. So much so we've had to reduce the entry capacity per race because there was just too many entering. If you have children who fit into this age group and enjoy riding their bike then we highly recommend you get them entered.

Finally we want to encourage more women to give racing a chance, therefore we have made the decision to subsidize the entry fee for the women’s categories. This is fairly controversial given that guys still pay a normal price. After looking at figures for female participation over the last 3 years at the Cannock Classic events the figure has risen from 4% to 26% since the change in event entry. We understand money isn’t the only reason for women choosing to race or not to race but it’s a start.

Eastnor Park has been made famous for mountain biking by massive events such as the Malvern Classic and Mountain Mayhem. Those huge events were fantastic and whilst we're not aiming to replicate them in any way we have chosen the venue because of what it offers to Mountain Biking.

The venue it's self is situated to the south of the Malvern Hills. As you'd expect it's got plenty hills itself but it also offers a real mix of terrain and surfaces that help make a fantastic MTB course. The guys at Malvern Cycle Sport are working hard on putting together a fantastic course that will suit all. Expect tough climbs, long fast descents, twisty single track mixed in with amassing scenery across the park.

Round 3 – Birchwood Bash 17th April

Held in a small wooded area the Birchwood event is a singletrack riders dream. An exciting compact venue which is fantastic for racers and competitors alike. Expect a lots of up and down technical sections and fun switchback singletrack. The course will test riders technical ability through line choice and the ability to maintain speed rather than throwing riders off big drops.

Malvern Cycle Sport have been holding MTB events at the Birchwood venue for a few years. The private land means it's locked away from riders throughout the year so it's extra special that you get chance to ride the trails.

The venue it's self is situated to the south east of the Malvern Hills. Similar in terrain to Cannock Chase with wooded areas, rooty under tyre the venue offers a quality old school race experience. The guys at Malvern Cycle Sport are working hard on putting together a fantastic course that will suit all.
